HOW DO I CHOOSE CLOTHES FOR RUNNING?
Running is a lovely form of exercise and can easily be done any time of the year in any weather. Everything you need is a pair of running shoes and good clothes. There is some easy rules that you can follow to avoid the most common misstakes when it comes to picking out clothes for running.
Rule 1 - do not dress to warm
That may be the most common misstake, too overdress. If you are freezing the first 1-5 minutes, you are wearing the right amount of clothes. If you have a bit of a transport to your actual run, put on a sweater or jacket that you can throw off before you start the run. Then you will not be cold on the way home again. In the most kinds of weather you will probably just need a windproof running jacket, a base layer sweater and a pair of tights. If you add a windproof hat, flexible running gloves and maybe a pair of socks in wool, you are good to go for the colder days.
Rule 2 - dress in layers
By dressing in layers, it is easy to build up the clothing after temperature and how intense the run is. Start from the inside and work yourself out, layer after layer. Closest to your body you have a technical sweater or t-shirt. The purpose with the first layer is that the material should transport the moisture from your body to the outside. If you use a cotton tee as a first layer, you would probably get soaking wet and be cold when you are cooling down the run. If it is cold outside, you will add a second layer. A thin sweater in a technical material that gives you warmth but also ventilates. The thicker the sweater, the more ventilation and warmth you will get. The third and last layer is there to protect the layers underneath but also protect you from cold winds and a little rain on the outside. It is important that the running jacket also breathes so that moisture can come trough and condense on the outside. You can use the same thinking when it comes to underwear. A detail that most of the people forget is boxers or panties in technical materials. Cotton is a bad option when it comes to clothes for running.
Rule 3 - look for seams and cuts
You move on in the same pattern during your run and that is why you should take a closer look at seams and cuts when you are buying clothes for running. Choose socks, tights, base layers and wind jackets that is made for running to be on the safe side. It is great if the seams are flat and placed on areas where they do not shaft. There are also seamless garments that have a minimal amount of seams. The fit on the tights is also important - the ones with compression gives a comfortable feeling, stay in place and does not shaft. A good running sweater is light, ventilates and preferably have holes for the thumbs in the sleeve-ends. The running jacket should have a zipper or Velcro in the neck so that you can adjust the ventilation during your run. In the same way, it can be nice with an adjustable bottom on the jacket if it gets unsuspectedly cold during the run and you want to tighten the fit to keep the heat inside.
TIPS WHEN YOU ARE OUT RUNNING
When you are out running and feel a bit too warm (which is more common than that you freeze), you can adjust your clothing with a few easy tips. The body have a few areas with great heat exchange that you can use. Ankles, wrists, neck and head are all areas with visible blood vessels. If you pull up the sweater so that it does not cover the wrist, you will get cooler there. The same goes for the other areas. But remember to to it in time if you begin to feel too warm, then you prevent unnecessary sweating and risk getting to cold afterwards. If you are starting to freeze it is way more simple - run a little bit faster and you will get warm ;)
